6 indicators for safe, healthy and respectful work environments in mining

TSM Protocol

The Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Safe, Healthy and Respectful Work Environments Protocol of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) is based on 6 key indicators, each representing an essential component in building a culture that prioritizes the well-being and dignity of all people involved in mining:

Indicator 1: Commitments and accountability

Establishing a clear and verifiable commitment to creating safe, healthy and respectful work environments, with accountability structures that ensure the incorporation of these values into all company operations.

Indicator 2: Health and safety management systems

Implementing comprehensive management systems that address both physical safety and psychological health, integrating proactive measures to mitigate risks and promote well-being.

Indicator 3: Psychological safety and respectful behavior

Recognizing the fundamental importance of mental health, this indicator focuses on creating environments free of harassment and discrimination, where each person feels respected and valued.

Indicator 4: Training, behaviour and culture

Ensuring that all employees — from frontline workers to executives — are empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to a safe, healthy, and respectful work environment, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and shared responsibility.

Indicator 5: Monitoring and reporting

Establishing robust mechanisms for monitoring and reporting working conditions, ensuring transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Indicator 6: Performance in physical safety and health

Maintaining a constant focus on the physical safety and health of all people in the workplace, with continuous efforts to improve performance and achieve the goal of zero accidents.

Each indicator is evaluated at five performance levels (C, B, A, AA, YY), with specific criteria that define the expectations for each level. This structured approach allows for a clear understanding of current performance and areas that require improvement.

By integrating these principles into the core strategies and day-to-day operations of mining companies, industry leaders can build a path not only to operational success, but also to a legacy of positive impact on communities, workers, and the environment.
