Data Riders was one of the featured speakers at the Water Management Symposium 2025 (WMS2025), held in Vancouver, presenting the lecture “Water Stewardship in Mining: Learning from the Front-Runners to Catch-Up More Intelligently”, delivered by Johan du Toit, Managing Partner at Data Riders.
The technical content of the presentation was based on a study co-authored by Fernando Damasio and Johan du Toit (Data Riders), and Willyan Debastiani (Vale S.A.), marking a strategic collaboration between consulting and industry to discuss advanced solutions for water use and management in mining operations.
Intelligence, Data, and Sustainability in Practice
The lecture showcased real-world cases of water management modernization in Brazilian mining operations, with a special focus on the application of Artificial Intelligence in the development of integrated systems for monitoring, consumption forecasting, and risk management.
According to Johan du Toit, “we are living through a turning point in global mining where water governance must move beyond reactive practices and become a strategic competence. It’s not just about operational efficiency, but also environmental responsibility and social legitimacy.”
The presentation also highlighted how operations can learn from international best practices and implement effective solutions more efficiently, through a model of intelligent governance driven by data, performance indicators, and continuous improvement.
