Promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in the mining industry
The Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive Working Environments Protocol, part of the Mining Association of Canada’s (MAC) Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative, presents a comprehensive framework to guide mining companies in building working environments that promote equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
With a focus on engagement, strategic development, and effective program implementation, the protocol encourages continuous improvement and recognizes the unique contributions of different social groups, creating spaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
3 Key Indicators of Success
The protocol is structured in three main indicators, which serve as a reference to evaluate the performance of companies and identify opportunities for advancement:
Indicator 1: Leadership and strategy
- Corporate commitment: Establish a solid commitment to EDI and develop a strategy based on dialogue with diverse groups.
- Implementation and reporting: Execute this strategy effectively, with regular updates and transparent accountability to stakeholders.
Indicator 2: Promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion
- Inclusive culture: Implement actions and processes that encourage a culture of inclusion in the workplace.
- Training and awareness: Provide robust training to promote understanding and practice of EDI principles throughout staff.
Indicator 3: Monitoring, performance and reporting
- Data collection and analysis: Gather relevant data to guide EDI strategies and publicly disclose progress.
- Objectives and results: Set clear goals and demonstrate measurable progress in promoting equity and diversity.
Each indicator is evaluated based on five performance levels (C, B, A, AA, YY), with specific criteria detailing expectations at each stage. This structured approach offers a clear view of the organization’s current stage and its opportunities for evolution.
The Protocol in Action: The Impact of Inclusion
The adoption of the protocol involves a rigorous process of self-assessment, strategic planning, and engagement with internal and external audiences. It requires corporate leadership committed to integrating EDI principles into the heart of operations and business strategy.
From inclusive recruitment practices to equitable access to development and growth opportunities, the protocol offers a pathway to transform the mining sector into a fairer and more representative space.
More than meeting legal requirements or improving reputation, investing in EDI brings real benefits: greater innovation, team satisfaction, talent retention, and organizational resilience. By adopting TSM’s EDI Working Environment Protocol, mining companies drive social progress and strengthen their competitiveness and sustainability in the global marketplace.
